Is there any Freeware HD cleaners out there that genuinely work? I am
demobilising a project where we have had an "open" touchdown PC that has
been used by every man and his dog for the past year or so [!] I have
no idea what could possibly be on it, and I don't want to know. I just
want to make sure there are no surprises. Genuine replies please. I am
about Intermediate user level skill. Thanks.

Don't know your operating system , 1st part XP , 2nd W98 etc .

You may need to print this .

I use all these cleaners for XP , each one specialises in a different
area .

Do not be supprised if hundreds of files are found .

Files are either removed to the programs backup or the Recycle Bin (
make sure the Recycle Bin is empty , before using the cleaners , that
way you know the files you have removed )

All ( except DustBuster ), allow you to restore them back into the
system , either by right clicking on the reg file in the programs
folder ( example Regclean & OleClean > Windows Explorer > Unzipped ,
click on either RegClean or OleClean ) & clicking on Merge .

jv16 PowerTools & RegSeeker both store in Backup on their main page .
Opening Backup allows you to either Restore or Delete .

EasyCleaner removes to the Recycle Bin & by opening the Recycle Bin ,
right clicking on the files & clicking Restore .

CCleaner , the advantage of this cleaner is , when Issues is clicked &
the boxes ticked , it will tell you before you fix ( doing one file at
a time ) why the file is there .
Configure the Windows , Applications & Issues panels to suit .

RegScrub
Click on Restore , click the backup to be restored , click on Restore
Selected backups .

DustBuster
Very quick , if you want to know what it cleaned , takes about 1 min to
clean ( depends on the speed of your comp ) you have about 4 seconds to
read the message displayed , when it is finished .

Find Junk Files
I use mainly for > Find Dead Links .

Backups
Once you are sure they are not needed again ( about one week ) they can
be deleted .

All that is necessary is for a program to write zeros (or any other byte
pattern) to the entire drive. All that do that "work". There are
many...

That may be secure enough for most people, but a really good recovery
program may be able to recover data which has been overwritten, believe
it or not. The US Military has a specification for 'really' overwriting
a HD which requires multiple overwrites with different patterns. The
problem is that a single overwrite may leave a trace of the old data
behind, since the platter of an HD can be magnetized or demagnetized at
different levels, just like a magnetic tape. Ideally, a one or a zero
should be recorded at exactly the same magnetization level, but in
reality, it doesn't happen.

Do a Google search; you'll probably find more than you ever wanted to
know.

Yeah, I know but what I said is likely to be good enough for the OP.
Or, he could just use a magnet...

Were you wanting to keep the OS and just remove clutter?

You might want to give the following a try.

Eraser is nice for most things. It has quite a few options and even refers
to Darik's Boot and Nuke for heavy trashing. You can find it at:
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/default.php

Darik's Boot and Nuke (every drive on a computer at one time so watch it)
would be my choice for most machines that need to be cleaned. I like that
you can power down and boot up using the created disk so that nothing
remains in memory prior to it starting up and wiping things out. It can be
found at http://dban.sourceforge.net/

The US Military has a specification for 'really' overwriting

If you aren't using Guttman's protocol, you're kidding yourself about
erasure.

Hello,

If you search about some of the P2P networks, ENCASE will wipe a HD.
Completely wipe it.

Its best done by writing all zeros all ones then random bits everywhere.
This is impossible to recover from.
