Hi,
We are setting up 25 computers for students at a local
school. Turns out some of the programs require
administrator privledges. Is there a way to have a
particular program default to admin while not changing
the privledges for the entire machine or having the
student click on "run as"?

Thanks
Rich

Hi Rich

I have no idea where you are located, but your LEA 'techies' should set all
this up for you.

Hi Brian,

We are setting up new computers for next September. We
have setup three classes of users, Students, Teachers and
Support. Students have limited rights - When we try to
run a particular program "Get Up and Go!" from Sunburst
using the Student's ID - we get an error saying "Director
Player 5.0 Error: "Unable to copy the driver file
c:\windows\Xobglu16.dll to your Windows directory. Your
disk may be full" - We have 35 Gigs free -

Reading the Tech support for the product - Sunburst says -
"You will get this error when running certain
applications when users do not have full access to the
C:\Windows or C:\WINNT folder on the local machine".

I do not want to grant the students full access to the
Windows Directory. I would like to run this (and others)
as an administrator or some other user with rights to the
directory without changing the student's rights.

Thanks
Rich

If this program wants to write to c:\windows. You could allow them to write
to the c:\windows folder. which you do not want to do. Giving them admin
rights they would allow them to be able to write to c:\windows or make an
other change that they feel they want to do. As this is for a school I might
suggest something. I work for a school and we use a product called deep
freeze http://www.faronics.com/html/product.asp It may not be right for
your use but it works well for us. It allow you to let students do what ever
they want to the pc, but as soon as they reboot the computer it goes back to
the setting that you have set up for them

We ran into this before. One thing you can try for that particualr app
is to copy over the Xobglu16.dll to the Windows folder. You should
also copy the Xobglu32.dll as well. This is due to non-admin rights
when using apps that are created with Macromedia Authorware.

I wish software vendors would make better apps that do not require
admin rights just to run.

You can try to run the program as admin and with it running see those
two files are created and then copy them to somewhere or look with the
app or CD.

I have a copies of these file, but I am at home right now so do not
know the versions or dates.

You can contact me if you do not find them. Here is my real email
address: mike.hendeson__AT__hawkinsisd.org. Relplace the __AT__.

Hi Brian and Mike,

What I did was go through all of the applications and
change the security, marked some of the DLL's as read
only and modified the sharing so all of the programs
work. I agree, it would be better if the authors worked
closer with the schools when creating the software.

Thanks for the really kind offer Mike -

Brian - I will tak a look ath the faronics.

Thanks for all of the help.

Rich
