I discovered I have a bad sector on my hard drive
(Acronis True Image couln't create an image) and ran
CHKDSK to fix it. However, on Startup, I get the error
that it "cannot open the volume for direct access."

According to a MS KnowledgeBase article in 8/03, this is
a known problem that MS is researching, but there was no
follow up.

Does anyone know what causes this and what to do? Or is
there another utility that will fix bad sectors on the
hard drive?

Hi Jerry,

I am having the same problem as you with CHKDSK. When I
reboot I get that same error. If you find a solution to
the problem can you please e-mail me at
(e-mail address removed).

I did try Fix-it Utilities to do the check disk, but
when it was done it told me I have errors and need to use
the Microsoft CHKDSK. That was a big help!

Thanks,
Jim

It sounds like you may running Zone Alarm 5. If yes it is a known
problem -see Zone Alarm forums for more details. A fix is awaited.

A workaround is to uninstall Zone Alarm, run chkdsk and reinstall Zone
Alarm. Some users have opted to revert to a version of Zone Alarm earlier
than 5 until a fix is available.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

You are right. It 's a ZoneAlarm problem. I had run
msconfig and disabled all but System Services and tried
to run chkdsk, but still had the problem. I falsely
assumed that ZoneAlarm etc. would not run (1) if I
disabled all startup items, and/or (2) nothing runs when
chkdsk is running (I thought that's why it runs at
startup). But I was obviously wrong.

I uninstalled Zone Alarm 5.xxx and then ran chkdsk, and
it ran just fine. I have now reinstalled ZA vs 4.5 after
checking the ZA forum.

You have saved me much aggravation. Thanks for the reply
and for the good counsel.
