When I run both chkdsk and Norton 2003 I show a problem in the Master File Table. I have run chkdsk C: /F but it won't fix the problem. I also have run Norton but I think all it does is run chkdsk, but anyhow it won't fix the problem either. I have tried booting from the XP Pro install disk to do a repair but it asks for the Administrator password and I don't know what to put in. Will the restore function work on NTFS? What password is the default when booted from the cd? What other programs can I use to repair the MFT

Many thanks

First, try running CHKDSK with the /R option. This takes a lot longer than
the /F option (hours), but fixes more things. It will ask you whether you
want to do this during the next reboot. Say "Y", and then reboot.

As for running the recovery console form the XP CD, that can also do CHKDSK
with the /R option. As for a password, if you built the PC and did not
enter a password when XP first asked for one, then try hitting return,
signifying no password. If someone else built the PC, an the password is
not blank, then you will have to ask them what it is.
