I saw an article that MS was aware of the problem
but no fix yet, but now I can't even FIND that article ...

Boot the WinXP CD, load the Recovery Console by hitting "r" at the prompt.
From the command prompt, run "chkdsk <drive> /r".

Nope .. no dice ..

It ran the CHKDSK from the recovery console, bu
it still shows the disk locked on boot up ..

This is really aggravating ...

That article still shows the problem open and the
last update was in August of 2003 ..

From all the posts here about this problem, ther
seems to be a LOT of people with the issue ..

What are you trying to achieve with chkdsk?

If disk content-recovery is your goal, instead of running chkdsk which
might modify the contents of the drive that you might be recovering, I
suggest you try a third-party program such as the one from runtime.org.
Such recovery software will *not* modify the original, which is what you
want when your disk is corrupt.

I don't see your original post. Besides "chkdsk /r " from the Recovery
Console, which should have run fine, I can't find where you've said what
switches you're using. Can you recap exactly what you're doing and then
what's happening/what errors you're getting if any and when you put
"eventvwr.msc" in the run box and stretch out event viewer are you seeing
any error or other info on chkdsk under the top and bottom categories? And
also do you know what problem you're trying to solve with it, or are you
running it because performance isn't what you'd like?

You might also find it convenient to get a 3rd party app like Diskeeper
(Exec Soft) or Perfect Disk (Raxco) which will give you a box to check off
and get chkdsk run as well as make it easy to defrag your MFT and Page file.

I'd bet the *problem you have* isn't still unsolved, but need to know what
steps you're taking to run chkdsk and what switches--gui chkedsk or from
command prompt?

OK ... Update time ...

I have completed FDISKing and reinstalling WIN XP. < Whew >
Got all the patches reinstalled.
Still have the LOCKED disk problem.

The reason this is a problem is that when someone shutsdown
with the BRS, the files are never corrected. A slowly descending
spiral until the computer no longer runs. This is about the third
trip down the path for me, and I need to find the location that the
"Locked" disk flag is kept. Some articles I have seen are blaming a
driver for not resetting the I/O flags correctly.

It does seem like more and more people have this problem !!!

Help !!!

RECAP ... I have run the Recovery Console, reinstalled, Fdsiked
reformatted..... I am LOST ....
