Have you got Zone Alarm 5 firewall installed on your computer ? If you have
it is almost certain to be the root of your problem. Follow the Zone Alarm
instructions to uninstall it and if you want a third party firewall
reinstall version 4.5.
Read all about it on the Zone Alarm notice boards.

Richard;

Here is a response from a ZoneAlarm Guru on thier site
(Zone Labs):

"There is no simple uncheck box for the problem, this is a
know issue of the 5.0 upgrade ZoneAlarms has been notified
and is working on rectifying all the bugs with an update
due out this summer to all known problems."

I am curious how you figured out ZAP 5.0 does this? I
removed ZAP 5.0 and the issue dissapeared completly. I
guess just waiting for XP SP2 should negate the need for
ZAP 5.0 anyway!

Thanks!

Remove ZoneAlarm 5.0. It worked for me! I wrote thier
Customer Service and they know of the issue and are
working a fix. In the mean time, just use and older
version of ZA.

I stumbled on it because I chanced to run CHKDSK right after I had upgraded
to ZA5. Nothing else had been changed on my computer so I began to suspect
ZA5. This was confirmed as others on the ZA boards and elsewhere had found
the problem as well.
ZA5 was released about two weeks ago and since then there has been a cluster
of posts on several NGs of people being unable to run CHKDSK. So my lucky
guess as to the cause of your problem was more like a racing certainty !
:-))
