CHKDSK and Folder Problems

I am having two problems with Windows XP Professional on
a Gateway m305 laptop (256 mb RAM, 2.2 P-IV), that I hope
someone can help me with.

1) I cannot get CHKDSK to run. The first time I set it
to run on a re-boot, it appeared and ran. Since then, I
have never had it successfully execute. Any ideas on
this one?

2) After start-up or re-boot (after the disk activity
light has completely stopped showing any activity)and I
double-click My Computer or a folder to open it, 30-45
seconds will pass before it opens. Yet, an application
will open immediately. Once My Computer or the folder
does open, everything proceeds as normal and subsequent
openings of My Computer or folders happen normally.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Was Windows 98 or another version of Windows installed before Windows XP? What is the manufacturers name and the model of your printer and scanner?

Try Event Viewer.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID:
Source, and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every Error Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Gerry,

My printer is an H-P Laserjet 1012 and my scanner is a
Canon LiDE 20. There was no other operating system on
this computer, it was bought brand new with XP
Professional installed on it.

I am not getting any error messages at all on either of
the two problems. DSKCHK just won't launch on reboot
after I have scheduled it to do so. I used the Event
Viewer and searched for WINLOGON. I found one entry from
the one time (the first time) I got it to run. Since
then I've tried to get it to run at least 10 times
without success.

I think I have figured out my second problem about
folders not opening promptly after boot. I think my
firewall (Sygate) is still doing something in the
background that is occupying the cpu even though the disk
activity light shows no useage. If I wait 30 seconds or
so after what appears to be a complete boot, there is no
problem getting folders to open in a timely manner. If I
try to open a folder right away, nothing happens.

I thank you for responding to this thread, and if you can
think of anything else I should check please let me
know. As it stands right now, I don't have any error
messages to check within Event Viewer.

Regards,
Jon

Are you entering dskchk? It should be chkdsk!

Do you have more than one drive or partition? If yes does it run on the other drive / partition? Chkdsk only runs after a reboot when it has to check the drive / partition containing the Windows XP operating system. For other drives / partitions it should run without rebooting. You have to enter the command each time to run chkdsk. Are you doing this?

Otherwise you could run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary internet files before running chkdsk. A bad file name can cause problems and often these are TIFs.

The reason I asked about your printer and scanner was that I have seen out of date scanner software delay the opening of Windows Explorer. The problem arose when the original software was intended for Windows 98 and there was totally new scanner software for Windows XP i.e. it was not just driver updates which one would anticipate. In the absence of error messages I guess you have to be patient. How long is it taking to complete the boot process?

Gerry,

I'm entering CHKDSK. Actually, I've tried to get CHKDSK
to run three different ways. 1) From a command prompt,
I've typed, "chkdsk f" and then a "y" when asked if I
want to have chkdsk run at the next boot. 2)I've run
Norton Disk Doctor and when Norton says it can't be run
because the OS has control of the hard drive (or
something along those lines)I've clicked "yes" to have
the disk checked at the next reboot. 3) and finally,
I've right-clicked on "C-Drive", chosen "properties",
clicked on the "tools" tab, clicked on "check now" button
of the "error checking" section and then agreed to having
the disk checked at the next boot. NONE of these have
caused CHKDSK to run at the next boot. Not only does the
CHKDSK screen not appear at the next boot, but the Event
Viewer shows no Winlogon file.

All my printer and scanner drivers are up to date, and
boot-up does seem to take a long time. I've never
actually timed it, but it has to be over 2 minutes. Even
when the desktop appears and the disk activity light
ceases to show any activity, the machine will not respond
for about another 45 seconds. The last thing to load is
my scanner. After it quits making noise, I know the boot
is complete and from that point on, the computer
functions flawlessly. I'm just worried that I have no
way to correct any disk errors. No matter how careful I
am with this computer, eventually the disk will need
repair.

Thank you for "hanging in there" with me on this issue.

Gerry,

OK, the main problem has been solved. CHKDSK now runs!
What had happened was this: I had read good things about
the free Zone Alarm firewall, and when I got this new
laptop I decided it would be a good time to switch from
Sygate (which I had ZERO problems with under Windows Me)
to Zone Alarm. I should have left well enough alone. As
soon as I uninstalled Zone Alarm, and installed Sygate,
CHKDSK was immediately functional.

I'm still having a small problem with 3+ minute boot-ups,
but at least I can now make sure my hard drive stays
healthy. I thank you, sir, for the time you took to help
me out. Have a great day!

If Event Viewer contains no information / clues as to the start up delay then there is another approach.

However, you should be aware that the initial scan by your anti-virus can delay handing over the computer for user input.

Oh another source of information about the start up process:
