Hi all...
I have a serious problem. I have frequent blue screens, where my browser
automatically opens up the the MS help page saying I have a disc
problem. I have run chkdsk several times, both in the guided mode and
scheduled after a reboot, and each time, the file checking (step 4 or 5,
I can't remember) gets to 23% after 30minutes or an hour, then does not
progress. I ran the program again last night and ran it overnight, but
it still stopped at 23%.
I chose both options: fix file system errors and scan and repair bad
sectors.

Any ideas out there? I have just done a back up of my docs, so doing a
complete reformat and reinstall is an option.
Note:
Win XP Pro SP2, 300gb SATA drive, 1gig ram.

Thanks!

The usual advice in this case is to obtain the disk manufacturer's
diagnostics (from the manufacturer's web site) and run them. They are
the definitive word on disk problems and the key to getting advice, and
possibly a warranty replacement, from the manufacturer.

And consider the possibility that your computer may have been attacked
by malware.

Try running CHKDSK /R C: from the XP recovery console.

The recovery console can be run directly from the XP CDROM, or from a
downloadable set of floppy disk images. The latter is free from Microsoft
and are called "setup disks".

See the following links for more information about the recovery console.

If prompted for a password, try just hitting return. If that fails, try
your normal password. If that fails, and if you can still get into XP and
run regedit, try this, then try running the recovery console (via a reboot
and CD or floppies):

Start à Run à Regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

The recovery console may or may not be an option for the OP, depending
on whether his install CD has the same service pack as his computer, or
if he has a slipstreamed install CD.
