When I (or people) receive emails, or anything that looks like the
following:

°¬À︦ÓëÈüÄËÄ·
µ¶ÀÉ-2002ÄêµÄµÚÒ»³¡Ñ©

Ȯȏ
ÖÜ´«ÐÛ_

====================================
--- EOF ---

What is it? I know it's suppose to be chinese, but this is not chinese
characters. Did the unicode conversion get messed up during transfer, etc? I
do have Chinese PRC (pinyin) input system installed and hence can write: ???

etc

Just wondering whether the above non-chinese characters can be translated to
proper chinese characters....

Check the encoding. Click view/encoding, most use Western European.

No, it's not necessarily Chinese. They are characters in a
foriegn alphabet, perhaps Chinese, but also perhaps Japanese,
Russian, Arabic, etc. They are rendered like this because you
don't have the proper a;phabet installed.

Did the unicode conversion get messed up during transfer,
etc? I do have Chinese PRC (pinyin) input system installed and

Pinyin is a system for rendering Chinese in our alphabet, in
regular Roman characters. If the characters sent are Chinese,
Pinyin won't help you.

etc

You need to have the correct alphabet installed for whatever it
is.

Go to start->control panel->date/language blah blah
click on add other languages
then click on the check box for asian languages (the middle tab "Languages")
Then on details and (if you want to be able to reply in the same
language click on the check box "extend support of advanced texts
services to all programs"

Also you can select explorer and click on tools-> internet options ->
languages... and add what ever encodeing you want and what ones you want
first.

Good luck to you hope this helps (and yes its chinese)
Cya
