Checkerboard design on cover

It's easier in a graphics editing program but in PowerPoint all you need to
create is a (for example) white square, then make a black square that is 1/2 the
width and height of the white square. Duplicate the black square and place both
black squares on top of the white square, one in the upper left corner and one
in the lower right corner. Select all and go to Draw > Group. Now copy and
paste the grouped object as many times as needed and position them to cover the
slide. When you finish I would recommend that you select all (Ctrl + A) and go
to Draw > Group.

However, unless you use very faint colors in the same color family and tone a
checkerboard background is about the most distracting optically painful thing I
can think of. You might want to consider using just a side bar that is
checkered and a plain solid color for the background.

Hi Paul,

You could use several methods, but the easiest depends on how big you want
the squares. Small squares, click on Format, Background, Pattern and choose
the diamond pattern. Big squares, add Autoshapes (Squares or Rectangles) to
create your pattern and then group the shapes together and send to back.
