Checkbox color

I have a spreadsheet with several checkboxes. The background for the spreadsheet is yellow and as soon as I select a checkbox, the area around the box turns white. I have set it to be transparent in the properties box. Any ideas on how to keep it transparent once it is clicked? If you hit the print preview button, it returns to the color yellow. Weird ... any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
 
You could use a checkbox from the Forms toolbar instead. It should
remain transparent, even when checked.
