check email address

what happens when the nslookup for mx records turns up a mail server that
belongs to the isp and not the actual mail domain of the company whose email
address i want to check as valid?

I want to know this in relation to nslookup; i know about other email check
tools on the web.
 
forgot to mention that i want to check with telnet sessions for this but if
there is no mail domain directly for that domain how can i use telnet for
checking smtp etc?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

If you do an nslookup to find the MX records for the domain, you're going to
find.....the MX records for that domain.

If joebloggs.com is using Earthlink for its mail servers, that's what you're
going to see.

nslookup isn't meant to check valid SMTP addresses. It just queries DNS.

Have I misunderstood you? What exactly is it you're trying to accomplish?
 
i couldn't check the smtp by sending a telnet session. the mx was for the isp
(mail1.e-access.com.au) not the domain itself.

Check what, exactly? You can try sending an email message to the purported
recipient's SMTP address in a telnet session. What are you trying to do?

Again, what exactly is it you're trying to do? You cannot check the validity
of an email address by using nslookup. If the domain you're trying to look
up uses the ISP's mail servers as its MX records -- well, of course nslookup
will tell you that.
