check boxes in word 97

I created a document that has check boxes in it but none of my coworkers can see them on the document. They are replaced with the letter p in lower case. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? Thank you in advance.
 
Perhaps they do not have the font you used to insert the symbol?
