I received an e-mail that links to a site selling OEM
software, one of which packages is Windows XP Pro. THe
website is http://www.cdatlow.com/soft/ which when you
look at it show XP Pro for $50 with free international
shipping. They claim the prices are so cheap because of
the lack of manuals and box and they state that you
receive the disks and serial number as legitimate OEM
products. The big question arises when they state that
because the product is OEM there is no customer support
from Microsoft. Am I right in thinking this is probably
pirated software?

Never trust a web site offering software prices that are
"too good to be true". Chances are, you'll end up with
nothing more than bogus or pirated software.

For good prices on software, visit www.newegg.com

I think it is Russian pirates. Since the $50 must be paid
and the software is shipped later, why do you think you'll
ever get anything.

| At a price that low, I think it would have to be pirated.
A
| legitimate copy would cost the seller more than that.

Yes. It is either fake or stolen. You must be able to
register the software at Microsoft and any buyer should
be able to get support from MS. That is your guarantee
that the software is genuine. Reading from the website,
the CDs will come from Eastern Europe (not exactly my
idea of buying CDs from). Watch out before buying online.

I thought registering was optional.

Very probably. And probably a volume licensed version of XP Pro (often
referred to in such circles as a 'corporate one') that has pirated
installation keys which will be rejected by Windows Update if not
earlier. Also the site is in Brazil, so you have little come-back if
they simply grab your money and run.

If you decide to try and see, it would be very interesting to know, but
Buyer Beware.

Where as I agree this software *might* be pirated, your conclusions are
misleading.

MS does not support OEM software. That's the OEM's job as part of their
OEM agreement. Also most often OEM's can't be registered since
registration is for purposes of support. OEM's may or may not have to
be activated by the end user, depending on what they are bundled with
it.

ALL MS software,OEM or Retail, can be registered.

If a site says that it can't be registered,it is a dead giveaway that the
software is pirated.

I've had 2 different system that couldn't be registered with MS because
they were OEM. I know others with this problem.
