What chat? I don't think you're talking about anything specific to windows
XP - you might post in a group for whatever chat client you're using.

The chat might have been encrypted.... what kind of chat were you
using?
try opening it with the chat software itself. If you are still having
trouble email me the chat... I may be able to send you a text copy of
it.

Yahoo chat archives are held in a form that can only be accessed by Yahoo
Messenger.. copy the archive files into the Yahoo folder that enables Yahoo
Messenger to see and load them..

It can't be Yahoo, or she did something really weird. You can view the
Yahoo messages in the archive, and you can also save them to a text file
(there's a menu option in the archive view). ICQ is the same. If they're
Messenger files, they're available (in plain English text) in a folder
in "My Documents" ("My Received Files" is the default). I don't remember
how to do it in AIM, and I'm not going to download the program to find
out, but I'd bet that's what she's using. AOL does nothing
straightforwardly.

Ahem, doesn't Windows XP come with Windows Messenger? That said, I agree
with Rhonda that it's probably AIM.

Sure. It also comes with notepad and solitaire. That doesn't mean this is
the best group for questions concerning same.

May well be right, but again, it's usually good practice for the OP to
include that information - which is why I asked. ;-)

Yes, but if you don't take the option to save as text, and just move the
archive elsewhere, they will not open..
