Characters on screen don't match what I am typing

When I hit my left shift key (only the left) I often get this on my screen

It leaves those marks if I hold down the key for any length of time. How
can I make it stop.
 
Open the Keyboard applet in Control Panel and adjust Character Repeat speed
settings.
