How do I change the read only access to the my docs folder. I have tried to
change it in the folder properties but it keeps reverting back to read only.

The reply, to MANY MANY posts about this (you /did/ do some research first?)
is that folder attributes don't mean anything. You can still read/write the
files inside the folder.

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for the response. I did see some of these posts but this is not the
case with this situation. When I move a file directly into the my docs
folder and open it, I can not change it. But if I move the file into a
folder within the my docs folder then it is writable.

Then give some details about the problem. When you move a file from where?
Locally or over the network? What kind of file? What version of XP are you
running? Service Pack level? Were you ever able to do this? If yes, what
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

op sys: xp pro sp2

file type: text but has a .ncf extension ( necessary for inputing file into
the cnc machines.)

The problem occurs when file is moved locally or across the network.

The individual swears that the software opens files directly from the my
docs folder on another computer he owns.(I have not verified this personally.)

I did some more troubleshooting and it appears to be a program specific
problem. The individual is using a CNC editing software called "Preditor
Editor". It automatically opens files in a read only state from the my docs
folder. I loaded the software on another machine and recreated the problem
with the same results.
