Is it possible to do an operating system upgrade from Windows XP Home to
Professional? Or do I need to do a new install with Windows XP Professional?
What's the best way to go? I need Windows XP Professional in order to work
remote for a new contract position. Thanks

You only need Windows XP Professional on the machine you will be remoting
INTO - and then only if you do not trust a third party product like UltraVNC
that you could use to remotely control your Windows XP Home Edition.

And the upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional is
one of the easiest/smoothest - but you should maintain your regular backups
and perform an additional one for safety right before upgrading.

Certainly.

Not unless you like wasting time.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
