Sorry for the novice question.

I have a web published with one hosting service that I
would like to move to another host. I've imported the web
from the current host onto my hard drive. Before
publishing it to the new host, do I need to do anything
else such as having the current host remove the web from
his server? I want to retain the same URL.

Thanks.

Joe,

When you say that you've switched hosts, I assume that means you've
transferred the domain name (URL) to the new host. Is that correct? If
not, you need to do that first. A domain name is simply a pointer, like a
phone number. Just as phone numbers can switch from one physical address to
another (think about when you move across town), domain names can move from
one web host to another.

Usually when you set up with a new host they give you a temporary address to
use so you can start getting your website online even before the domain name
switches. Publish from your computer to the new, temporary address. Then,
when your URL transfers, your website will already be there and waiting for
visitors.

Keep in mind that transferring a URL can take a few days. When a URL is
transferred from one host to another, that change has to be updated accross
the net. Some (many?) of those computers only update themselves once a day
in one big batch. Because of this, I usually recommend overlapping your
hosting for one month. It may cost you a few extra dollars, but think of it
as insurance making sure your site is continuously available.

Hope that helps,

1. you need to Publish your web back to
your hard drive to keep it intact, as
importing it won't do it.

2. establish an account with your new host.

3. Publish to your new server location using new IP
address. ( i.e. http://123.456.789.123
( you can also publish directly from the old to
the new server )

4. Transfer your domain to the new Domain Name Servers
your new host gives you.

5. Wait until the domain propagates throughout the DNS
servers and people will automatically be directed
to www.yourdomain.com at your new host
when it becomes effective. ( usually 24 to 48 hours )

6. after the DNS transfer is effective, you can once again
publish to http://yourdomain.com

7. You can tell when the transfer is effective by opening
a command window and typing:
ping www.yourdomain.com and pressing enter
and noting when the "new" IP address is returned.

8. Delete ( or have your old host delete ) your old web.
