Changing Host names / Hostname problem?

I am doing a little bit of administration on the computers running XP
in my lab. The problem is that when i try to login, the computer says
it cannot contact the domain controller.

My question is, is there somewhere a list of allowed hostnames that can
login to the domain? Because if there is, i suspect that one computer's
name is not on that list. If so, what's that list called? What
program do i use to change that list or add a computer?

Here's the situation.

Computers are named by building, room, computer number. There is a
computer in there named

building-room-19

I think it is supposed to be

buildingroom-19 (without the dash, since that's how all the other ones
are named).

when i try to change it to buildingroom-19 it says that name already
exists.

but, as it is, the computer can't login to the domain, and i can't
login to the computer (using my username on the domain). This, even
though the computer is connected to the network (i can access the
Internet). that's why suspect it's just a naming problem.

So, is there some where that i can just add the current computer's name
to the domain? or am i way off here and something else is going on?

Check your domain controller for the entry. Remove it if erroneous.

Make sure your machine has the IP of your domain controller in its own
TCP/IP properties for DNS server.

Remove it from the domain by joining a workgroup. Rename it. Rejoin the
doamin. Also before you do this check AD and compare the net bios names.
