How do I change my 'From' information in newsgroup postings to prevent real
information from being harvested by spammers?

Since you're using Outlook Express, go to Tools, Accounts and locate the account for this news server. Change your details there.

I know that munging is recommended by all kinds of people who should
know better, but it's a violation of the RFCs (google RFC 1036 and Son
of 1036).

There are, however, alternatives. One is setting up an address just for
posting. Another is getting a disposable account.

Nothing about RFCs on that site - just a PERSONAL opinion......

The reason underlying the "personal opinion" is the RFC I suggested he
google.

My newsserver, being compliant, will not allow me to munge my address,
although it does offer reasonable alternatives.

There are a lot of better ways to avoid spam than munging one's address.

But this is usenet, you can do whatever you want, no matter how selfish
or self-serving.

look at my headers.

I get about 4 spam emails a day, and that's with a website as well.

Eh?

I did. There's nothing wrong with what you've done, and it's covered in
RFC 2606.

But it's not what most people do. And that's not what most websites tell
people to do to munge their address.

That's the point.

Eh?

A lot of people make big messes for others by following bad
recommendations about how to munge. Better not to munge at all than to
generate a whole slew of bounces for a sysadmin who never did anything
bad to you (that's the generic "you," not you). And then you've got the
bozos who think it's still cute to bounce mail. It's bad enough that
there's so much garbage clogging the pipes; there's no good reason to
create more.
