Chris.

I take photos on my camera, then load them into my photo
program on my computer, but when I want to save
individual photos into my photo program they
automatically get saved in 'my pictures' as well. I
don't want to have to double up on space. Even when I
rename the file, it makes a duplicate in 'my pictures'
and when I delete the file from my pictures it also gets
deleted from my photo program. I have got far too many
photos on my computer and am looking for a way to save my
favourite pictures without having to have to double up in
file size when I rename them in my photo program.
Any advice would be nice. Thank you in advance. Chris.

As your own response to yourself didn't seem to help, I'll give it a
shot. It sounds like what's happening is that your files are getting
saved in My Pictures and your "photo program" (the name of which you
failed to mention) is looking there for the files. It's not likely that
there are duplicate files, your photo program is just showing you what's
in My Pictures. Sometimes it helps to RTFM.
