Changing File Folder To Save File Using Office Takes >45 Sec

When using Office, it takes *forever* to save a file to a new folder. This
happens when I want to save a file to a folder other than the current one.
I've removed all extra programs, cleaned the C: drive, and defragmented it.
I've run various system tools to ensure the registry is okay. And I've tried
running the performance monitor when I change folders: the system appears
idle during this extremely long waiting period.

It's a 1GHz Athlon PC with 80GB IDE drive and 768kb memory that runs fine
and does all I need. All Windows XP Home Edition patches are up-to-date.

Which version of Microsoft Office? Which programme in Office are you
using when you execute Save As?

Is the computer standalone or networked? How much free space on your C
drive? How many files in the receiving folder? How large are the files
being saved?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? Any Norton or
McAfee utilities running continuously in the background?

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'll answer your questions in order:

Office XP SP3

MS Word, Excel, PPT, etc. (It appears there is something affecting the file
i/o system. I'm running FAT 32.)

Computer is directly wired (not wireless) to a Linksys Wireless Router,
connected to a cablemodem.

C: drive had over 16GB freespace for a long time. I deleted about 1,000
files today, so now it has over 22GB free. The problem persists.

The files being saved range from 5kb to 50kb. Not large at all. (Note that
once the save commences, it saves instantly. The dreadful delay is waiting
for the folder to open. That is true if you're saving into the current
directory. But if you change directory...you can take a nap before it comes
back.)

Norton Systemworks Pro with anti-virus running. Also running Spyware Doctor.
But these seem to only affect operations when using Internet Explorer. (Of
course, I could be wrong about that.)

Thanks for your reply!
Eric

I would look at the scanning features in Norton System Works. I had my
anti-virus set to scan opening Excel files. After suffering it for a
while I
turned it off. I could see no point in virus scanning every file I
opened
with Excel, which I had previously created myself and only worked on
offline.

Many users find Norton ( and McAfee ) products inhibit system
performance.
I did. The Corporate Norton products are said to better than those
available
for Home use.

Your other reply mentioned Network Access. This could be a problem if
you
are accessing another computer to store and retrieve data. Not so common
with home users but some do create small home networks.

Hi,

Sorry to have dropped the thread for so long...work....

As you suggested, I checked my Systemworks settings. I did not have the
Office plug-in running, so that is not likely.

But using your idea, I check SpyWare Doctor, which I also run. I could not
find a configuration setting that related to Office. But I killed the process
tree, which it bitterly protested.

Voila! My <File><Open><upFolderIcon> works as one would expect. And I can
get up down the file directory at will again!

Of course, I'm running without my Spyware Doctor....(hmmm....)

Thanks!
Eric
