Does anyone know how to change the default when you start a new post or
reply window so the cursor is ready below the original text?

You could strike Ctrl+End when first starting a reply, or install OE-
Quotefix, which fixes several Outlook Express problems, including
enabling you to bottom-post by default.

Or, use a real newsreader, such as SuperGravity, Agent, or XNews. All
three of them allow you to bottom-post by default. Personally, I prefer
SuperGravity.

OE-Quotefix: http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/

SuperGravity:

Agent: http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

XNews:http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Use a better newsreader than OE! There are quite a few of them for
Windows. Do a search in this group using Google Groups for
"newsreaders" and you'll see lots of posts.

Thank you very very much for pointing me to Quotefix. I try not to top post
but always forget, especially when my cursor lands me at the top. This looks
like an invaluable utility for the slow learning curve crowd!

Personally, top-posting has its advantages. I do bottom-posting mostly
because my newsreader does it.

If you want to top-post, more power to you.. I guess people do bottom-
posting for the same reason they sort threads in Agent by date,
ascending -- because that is the way Agent does it, and they are
religiously attached to Agent. People top-post in Outlook Express
because that is the way Outlook Express does it.

It's easy to change Agent's date sorting: Options/General
Preferences/Message List/Date Sorts Most Recent First; you then have to
go to Group/Sort Messages by Date and resort the group.

Thats great, John. But only ONE problem with that: When you sort by
DATE, descending, you LOSE the threads!!! Well, Agent 2.0 supposedly
will allow you to sort by DATE, descending, and still retain the
threads.

Quick addition to your list: Mozilla's Compose module for the newsreader
allows you to post above or below the quoted text.
I did not include Mozilla/Netscape for one reason: It does not yet
contain serious filtering capabilities. Example: you are unable to
define a view which will show BOTH all watched threads and all unread
articles at the same time.

The *only* advantage is for *only* those involved in the thread. Anyone else
just browsing at subject lines who pops in to see if there's something
interesting to learn (or whatever), will be stuck reading completely the
opposite from the learned and logical way...bottom to top...which also forces
them to scroll 'up' to be able to 'read down' any paragraph. Pretty
non-sensible. That's why in 'public' forums, it benefits *everyone* to post
normally, the way most people read, so that anyone just coming in can
logically, easily, ans sensibly, read down through the thread to gain any
knowledge of the discussion, up to the present. Top posting should be left to
private forums, thus only those involved, who already know what's been going
on, can carry on without having to re-read everything.

If it makes you happy and fulfilled to bottom-post, then HOT DOG!!!
Others will continue to just use the default of the newsreader they are
using..

Of course they will...why should stupidity and laziness be corrected when it's

You really are a jerk. You need a few lessons in treating others with
respect. Unfortunately, I am also a jerk, so you won't get any lessons
from me..
