I would like to use Excel as an ad hoc tool for designing
floor layouts. To do this, I need to change the default
shape of the (empty) spreadsheet cells from rectangular
to square. Is there a way to do this?

One way is to click on the top left corner of the fame to highlight the
whole worksheet, than in the column frame drag any column so that the cell
becomes a square then click anywhere in the worksheet.

There are bound to be other ways as well.

.
You can adjust the height and width of the rows and
columns. Go to the row numbers and right-click. Pick row
height and adjust the height. Go the column letters and
right-click. Pick column width and adjust the width until
you get a square

On the Microsoft website I found a template named (appropriately enough)
GraphpaperTemplate1.xls.

You might need the graphics on the sheet, but the cell layout may be just
what you're looking for.
