Hi all. How will Windows 2000 react to a CPU change? Want to change
from P4 1.4 to P4 2.8. Will there be HAL problems or will I need to
reinstall W2K?

should be fine. (just remember to turn off hyperthreading via the bios if
it offers it.)

No, just the CPU and heat sink & fan for bigger CPU, nothing else.

Changing the CPU alone will have no affect on Windows 2000 (I think XP
is a different story).

In addition, all this is assuming his motherboard can support both the
Willamette and Northwood form factors. I don't quite understand how the
manufacturers manage to support both since the two are totally different
sizes but I'm wondering if a board purchased with a 1.4 will be able to
support a 2.8. But this is neither here nor there since the original
question asked was if Windows 2000 would still work after a new CPU was
put in, which it will.

Yeah... I'm aware of that. It's a Dell Dim8100 with a Socket 423
(Willamette). I might not be able to do it without a socket adaptor,
I'll see what Dell Tech has to say about this.

There shouldn't be any issues with changing a single CPU. If you were
going to dual's however, then you would need to make a few changes...

It shouldn't be an issue - be sure to have your W2K CD
ready to go, or copy the i386 directory to your HD.

In my experience, I've been able to swap a 2K installed HD
to a new machine (ALL NEW hardware) and after some re-
installing of new hardware drivers and rebooting a few
times it'll work.

You should be OK.
