I read instructions in a Newsgroup recently on how to manually change the
colour of a folder in a directory tree but now cannot recollect which group
I was looking at (true to my alias of "Dumb Bunny"!)

Anyone able to point me in the right direction, or even better provide
information on how to do this?

You just use the Customise tab in the Properties when you right click the
folder, and then change to another folder icon. You can get lots of
different coloured ones on sites like deviantart.com.

There is a pretty handy little program (not free) that can do this all very
quickly for you, and comes with a bunch of folder icons, and you can add
your own ones that you find on the net as well. There is also a free
version with reduced functionality:

ss.

I also used that one. IIRC it affects the default behaviour for special
folders like My Music or My Videos if you use it to change those particular
icons so that's something to watch out for.

It has Vista, XP and 9x style icons, selectable from a drop down menu, with
additional high contrast versions of same.

The current version supports Vista but I had to unblock the help file before
it would open. I also have the program running as administrator but that
might not be necessary with this version. No installation required.. unzip
and run, so no uninstall required if you don't like it.. just delete the
program folder.
