Had to change the CMOS battery yesterday, 30 second swap out. Rebooted
computer, set BIOS settings to what they were pre-battery swap, rebooted, XP
starts to load and thats it. it sat over 20 minutes with the blue bar under
the logo.

It the bios settings were the same as pre-battery install, my would XP not
start. Even in safe mode, it would sit.

Ideas ?

If the bios settings were the same as pre-battery install, XP would run.

Somewhere you have activated a new device on the Mobo.

Just review each and every setting, especially those relating to on-board devices.

I don't see the original thread message, apparently not on my ng server.

One of the reasons for a boot hang can be forgetting to set the time
properly in BIOS after changing the battery. If it points to a time before
XP was installed then XP has been known to get very unhappy about that.
Maybe under that condition it's something to do with a licensing issue ...

I wrote them all down before I began, just as every guide tells you to do.

You may have hit the nail on the head there. The USR Modem was not seated
correct so I give it a gentle push to make sure it was seated correctly,
maybe that was enough to confuse XP.
