I have a document that was typed with Open Office, a cheaper version of Word,
and the file type is, i.e. Resume.sxg. My need is to change it to a
different type of file because whenever I send it to anyone, they cannot open
it. I have limited options.

I don't know what options Open Office has, but almost every word processor
lets you save a document as an rtf file (Rich Text Format). All your
correspondents should be able to open that.

Okay, maybe I worded my question wrong. What I want to do is change my file
format/type so that it can opened with Microsoft Word of Microsoft Works.
Please help ASAP.

I answered your question. Use Save as, and save it as an rtf file.

Haven't used OO recently, but IIRC you can reopen the document and use
file/"save as" to change the format to .doc.

Why not do as Ken suggests?
Open the file in Open Office and save it in a common format that all
can read.

And then select rtf documents when you Open files to select all files which
are .rtf. Then open the file which has been saved as rtf.
