I have noticed 2 changes in my Word program, which, are
causing me trouble.
First of all, there is the name change from Word to
Wordpad.
Second, I don't have my Spell Check or Grammar wizards to
correct my Word documents.
As a returning college student, I use my Word program all
the time in order to do homework assignments.
So, if there is anyone out there who can by any chance
help me, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Carolyn

It sounds as if your word documents have associated themselves with wordpad
(a separate application). From control panel select folder options. On the
file types tab scroll down and find the extension 'doc'. Select it and see
if it says Microsoft Word as the 'open with' application. If it doesn't
select change and make word the opening application.

WordPad is not Word, but is a built in Windows program for doing minor editing with .doc type files. If you are getting WordPad when you click on a .doc file, either Word is not installed or the file association has been changed. If you start Word, then navigate to the file you want to open, does it work OK then?

If that test succeeds, you can easily change the program association. Navigate to a .doc type file or a shortcut to one (you can probably find one in Start, My Documents). Hold down the Shift key and right click on the file or shortcut select "Open with", then "Choose Program". In the list of programs select Word, and put a checkmark in the box for "Always use the selected program...".

If you are unable to open a document manually in Word, your best bet is to reinstall the program.

First, there was not a name change.
Second, are the files showing the Word icon?

Right click on a 'Word' file, select Open With......
Choose Microsoft Word.
Checkmark "Always use this program......"

Word is not in the list?
Reinstall Word.

No, no! There is no name change. Word and Wordpad are two very
different things.

Microsoft Word is a full-featured word processing program. It's
not part of Windows, but can be bought, either stand-alone, as
part of Microsoft Office, or, least expensively, as part of
Microsoft Works Suite.

Wordpad, on the other hand, comes with Windows. It's hardly a
real word processor, just a slightly souped up text editor, and
is suitable only for the most basic tasks.

Correct. Wordpad, as I said, is *not* a full-featured word
processor, and does not have such tools.

As a returning college student, I use my Word program all
the time in order to do homework assignments.

In that case, you'll have to spend some money, and buy a copy of
Word , Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Works Suite. Check your
school store; they may have aacademic licenses for sale at
substantial discounts.
