Changed group membership, user disappeared from Welcome Screen

I used user passwords2 to create a user called 'Maintenance' and granted it membership in the 'backup operators' group (I am trying to get ntbackup to run as a scheduled task unattended)

While there, I granted my own account membership in the 'power users' group, and then thinking better of it, removed it from the 'power users' group

Both accounts have disappeared from the Welcom log-in screen, but I can log into both accounts via cntl-alt-del cntl-alt-del sequence - all folders and files are fine

I used regedit to check HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList to see if they had been added the list of hidden accounts (i.e. the Adminstrator account is found there). Neither account was present

A search of these boards and google have yielded several identical problems but couldn't find a solution - anyone out there figure this one out yet

Certain groups are not displayed on the welcome screen - backup operators and debugger operators for example

I forgot that I had removed myself from the administrator group for security purposes, but never added myself to the users group. The only group I belonged to was the debugger operators

I added my user account to the users group via lusrmgr.msc and my user account icon has magically reappeared on the Welcome screen

To anyone else who has this problem - check to see if you're still in the administrators' or users' groups. If not, add the user your missing to one of those two groups and your icon should reappear on the Welcome screen

Thanks Roger.

I did download TweakUI and give it a shot, but couldn't find the users I was looking for until I added them to the correct user groups.

Apparently, some user groups such as backup operator and debugger operator are not set to appear in the Welcome screen - I think they are like auxillary roles that are meant to be added to an existing user already in another user group to enable additional permissions.

Thanks for the reply!

You're welcome Jim:)

Thanks for your information concerning which users appear on the
welcome screen.
