Change View Default

This may be a real basic question for you experts - when I'm searching for a file I find it easier to view the icons as a list, but my XP seems to display them as "Large Icons" by default, so I need to go into "View" each time I change a location. Is there a way to change the default, so that it always opens as a "List", with or without details. I would appriciate any input on this - am a little literate on the machine, but not what I would call expert!
 
Tools, Folder Options, View tab, use the apply to all folders button.
