change the color of a cell as a function of the cell value

i would like to know if it is possible to set the color of a cell as a
function of the numeric value within the cell (say red, yellow green) and
then if I change the value have the color automatically update.

You can, but i can't be much more specific without details. look into
conditional formatting or post details.
