Is there a way in Windows 2000 to change (or add) the services used for
searching for people in "Start" -> "Search" -> "For People..."?

Using most of the services (Active Directory, Bigfoot Internet
Directory Service, Infospace Business Directory Service, Infospace
Internet Directory Service, and WhoWhere Internet Directory Service)
give me this dialog:

"The specified directory service could not be reached."
"The service may be temporarily unavailable or the server name may be
incorrect."

I even tried to disable firewall, searched for spyware and viruses, but
that didn't help.

This is based upon a LDAP Lookup (Light Directory Access Protocol). The objective is to
have "other" LDAP servers and their settings. Then go to Outlook Express and go to;
Tools --> Accounts --> Directory services and add the LDAP Server(s).

Most LDAP servers use TCP port 389 and that needs to be passed through the FireWall. You
may also need to set a "Search Base" based upon X.500 (?) convention/syntax.
