http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder - if you know what you're doing you can edit the
registry on the HD but you really and truly must know what you're doing.
Otherwise all you're doing to do is attempt to edit the registry on the CD
which sort of doesn't work. ;-)

And yes, I've used this to hack the startup on severely infested and
infected machines.

Alternatively install an OS image in parallel. Same techniques and issues
apply but in this instance, you can hack the wrong OS image permanently and
easily.

Here are two additional methods:
- Install the disk as a slave disk in some other WinXP/2000 PC,
then use regedit on that PC to load and modify a specific hive
from your current PC.
- Boot the machine with a boot disk from here:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
then use its registry editing functions. It's all Command Line
stuff but it works. Note that much of it is case sensitive.
