I backed up .ost file (default outlook) in user's profile. Now I copied the
file to same place after reinstallation of new office 2003. I tried to open
outlook data file but received an error stating "xxx.pst is not a personal
folders file" Anyone know how to convert this file to .pst so Outlook can
recognize it in order to open or import it.

If the OST came from an Outlook 97/98/2000/2002 machine, search Google for
OST2PST.

I might have saved the file as pst (file extension) so the converter software
could not ID it as ost. But then OL 2003 stated it is not personal folders
file although it has .pst extension. (Only Outlook 2003 involved, no older
version)

Anymore idea?

You might have ? I'm just curious...either you did ? Or did not ?

Also, how come you backed up the OST file and not the PST file ?

Considering that the OST is just a mirror of what is on the Exchange server,
then I'm guessing it is okay to lose the file. Or is there something else
going on that you aren't telling us? (e.g. Something happened to the
Exchange server or its database and you are trying to recover user data due
to the way the server was recovered.)

Try the OST to PST Converter tool, which makes OST to Outlook PST Conversion safe and easy. It converts all data, including emails, notes, contacts, attachments, calendars, journals, and more. Softaken OST to PST Converter Software converts OST files to several file types such as PST, EML, EMLX, MSG, and MBOX. You can check the data of your OST file before converting it to a PST file. It enables you to easily convert an unlimited number of OST files to PST files with just a few mouse clicks. The tool supports all versions of 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019 MS Outlook.
