I have two PC's on the same Workgroup, and have named both PC's for network
identification.

When I NET VIEW from the CMD console it sees the following informaition:

\\045860020204 DESKTOP-1
\\laptop-1 LAPTOP-1

my question is how to change the 12 digit number to a more network friendly
name? So far I have changes the computers name and identity but it still will
not change the 12 digit number.

The PC with the twelve digit number is running windows Media Centre 2002
SP2. Could this be the problem?

Thanks

If you have attempted this from the "Identification" tab in Network
Properties, there may be a registry setting someplace. Use "regedit", and
do a search for that number.

The first part is the machine's name,
the second part it the description.

To change the description:
Win-Key+Break, ( or r-click 'My Computer', | Properties );
Computer Name tab;
Enter a new description.

To change name, from the same place:
'Change' button;
Enter a new name.
