Hi to all. I have a question about changing the "name" listed in all the
document paths on a PC running XP Pro SP2. I know how to change the
"registered user and organization" (thanks to D Knox for the vbs script)
BUT, I don't know how to change the "C:\Documents and Settings\"NAME"\ "
information. I'm new on this job and took over an existing PC. It's not a
huge deal, but it is annoying. Any help will be greatly appreciated and
thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Morey G

the name you are referring to is the name of the User. Just set up a new
user with your name, and the problem is solved.

Gordon,
Thanks for the tip. I did the user name change and yet I still see the old
user's name in all the document paths, for example:
C:\documents and settings\"OLD NAME"\my documents is still listed yet the
folder's name is "Morey G's Documents"
That's the change I'd like to make

Thanks again

delete the old user! (After having transferred any settings and documents
you need....)

There are two methods to do so. First, is to rename the user profile folder
manually using Windows Explorer (running from a different user account), and
then changing the ProfileImagePath pointer in the registry. Second method is
to make an exact duplicate copy of a profile, using the Copy To option.

The profile home path / folder name cannot be changed without editing the
registry. Use one of these methods:

Method 1

Read the *warnings* mentioned in that article.

Method 2

Or, you can create another user account, with your preferred user name, and
then copy the files & settings to the newly created profile.

Many thanks to you both. I used the method Ramesh pointed me to, Method 1,
and it worked well. The only change has been that in the "My Computer"
folder I no longer see my Documents Folder under "Files Stored on this
Computer". Other than that, I think everything else is good.
Regards again,

Morey

Glad that helped, Morey.

Fix the My Documents path in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT.EXE. This launches the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the above branch, and modify the "My Documents" path for your
user account.

Note: Be sure to have appropriate registry backups before altering the
key/value.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).
