I just installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server, SQL Server 2000 and some other applications on a PC.

Once I did this and got it mostly configured I realized that I need to change the Machine Name for this PC.

I went into Control Panel | System and selected the Network Identification Tab.

I noticed that Properties was grayed out and there was a message saying "Note - The identification of the computer cannot be changed because the computer is a domain controller"

I really need to change the Machine Name. Is my only option to do a fresh install of Windows 2000 along with reinstalling the applications and redoing the configuration?

Thanks.

You'd need to demote it, rename it, then promote it (using dcpromo),
presuming you have another DC on this domain & it has the FSMO roles as well
as AD-integrated DNS on it.... Don't know what effect that will have on
SQL - just don't try this on a server running Exchange or you'll hose it.

Lanwench,

That was my only Domain Controller on my system. I am going thru the process of reinstalling and configuring Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Thanks for you reply
