I have just moved to Italy and am finding the same problems as many other
people... I decided to "upgrade" from 98. So, went on the Microsoft website
looked for all the necessary information about upgrading. Didnt see anything
telling me I needed my 98 install CD or that I have to buy a version which is
the same language as the current version I have, or the fact the language of
the product you purchase is embedded in that product and can not be
changed..... Why???

I dont have the install CD because I left it in the UK, and anyway I dont
want all my menus etc... in Italian. My Italian is not that good yet.... :)

Anyway, anyone know how to explain in Italian to the shop owner where I
bought my software that I cant use it and why I had to open the box and try
and install the software before it tells me that I cant use it... also, can I
have a refund or do they have an english version of the software?

P.S. Is there really nothing else I can do?

In the future bring appropriate CDs with you.
A catastrophic failure of your hard drive would give you a worse dilemma.

The ability to change languages would increase the size by many CDs.
There is limited availability of the Multilanguage User Interface which
gives the ability to change languages, but that will only install on an
English Windows XP.

You do not need the Windows 98 CD to upgrade if Windows 98 is installed, but
the languages need to match..
If you perform a Clean Installation of Windows XP with an upgrade CD, you
need the qualifying media such as the Windows 98 CD.
In that case, language of the original and upgrade do not have to be the
same in my experience.

Find a local friend to talk to the shop owner.

Have someone at home send your Windows 98 CD and Product Key and have them
buy and send Windows XP in English for you.
