Is there a way to change the email type of a contact from Exchange to SMTP?
When I'm setting up internal contacts, Outlook is assigning them as Exchange
addresses instead of STMP . . . but I want them to be SMTP.

Outlook will always resolve to the internal Exchange address, not the SMTP address. Why do you need them anyway?

Because they are internal and you're connected to Exchange, this would be a
default occurrence. My question is why would you set someone up as a contact
when they're already in the Exchange Global Address List? The GAL would
always be up-to-date, if you create your own contact list it can easily get
out of date as people come and go, change names, go on leave, etc.

because for some reason they're not working unless they're sent through the
exchange account (instead of the pop/smtp account which is the default).
Plus I like the smtp addresses as a backup in case exchange is down.

And for the record, I also found a couple workarounds (although they're
somewhat tedious).

1) Remove the exchange account, create the contacts, then add the exchange
account back

2) Create a new distribution list . . . click "add new" and then check the
box to add them to your contacts. This allows for SMTP creation. You don't
even have to save the DL because the contacts get added anyway.

In that case, see http://www.slipstick.com/exs/portagal.htm for available
solutions.

I bet Outlook will eventually resolve those contacts back to EX addresses, though.
