change default directory

I've changed the default directory in Tools, Options for documents but it
still keeps looking to the My documents folder which is a real hassle as the
folder I'm working in is on a network about 10 levels down.
Any suggestions?
 
As a workaround (if you are using Word 2003), go to the deisred folder
(inside File, Open). Then choose Tools, Add to My Places. Now within File
Open, you just have one click (on the left-hand Places Bar) to get to that
folder.
 
Thanks, I'll try that but would still like to know why it's not automatically
going to the directory I specified under tools - options. So if anyone could
tell me it'd be great.
