The first problem I had with my CD the driver was either "damaged or
missing".

Being primarily a Mac person, I reasoned that if I copied the CD
driver from another XP Pro machine and put it into the drivers folder
then it might just work. Unfortunately it only made matters worse.

Now my XP indicates secondary drive failure and lists my CD drive as
type unknown. I tried add hardware, but again my CD drive does not
appear. It does not appear in the device manager either. There is no
power to the CD at all. The eject button does not work.

Any suggestions. Please be kind.

Thank you very much.

With Windows XP, it is possible to roll back the driver to a previous
version. Here is what I would do. First, open Device Manager (you can
get this by right clicking My Computer and choosing Manage). Next, find
your CD drive in the device list, and double click it. Click the Driver
tab, and click the Roll Back button. Restart your computer if needed.
If that didn't work, go back to Device Manager and remove the CD drive
from the list. Restart your computer again. Windows should try to
reinstall the CD drive. If that works, you're done. If not, you will
have to try to get a driver for your specific model of CD-ROM drive, and
install that.

And that's all I have for you today.

Windows XP supports CD drives natively. There is no need for other
drivers.. You say that Windows indicates a drive failure -- very likely
that is exactly what has happened; the drive has failed.

GateKeeper,

I appreciate your input, but the CD does not even appear in the device
list.
The CD is a HL-DT-ST CD RW GCE-8400B. The driver appears to be a
5.12535.0

I obtained this info during my previous trouble shooting attempts when
the CD drive showed up in the device manager. I wish I could go back
in time, but my system restore is not working either.

Thanks for your help. Any input is appreciated.
