Impressive utility. Thanks WinGuy and Ricky. It did find and fix a
problem. The problem is, it's right back again after I log off and log
back
on. So next problem, how to find out who's setting that registry value?
FWIW, that CD utility is not supposed to be necessary for XP at SP2 level.
Something is turning it back off by accessing the registry, then, and it
probably will not show in Task Manager. I now suspect, regardless of what
your anti-malware utilities might be saying to the contrary, that your
machine is infected. Be sure your antivirus is up to date, new stuff comes
out every day. If you don't have antivirus then go get AVG 7 Free, from
grisoft.com and be sure to update it, and then use it. The old AVG 6 Free is
no longer supported after the end of December 2004. Happy New Year. If you
have expired antivirus, uninstall it before installing AVG. Multiple
antivirus utilities running at the same time can fight each other and
destabilize your system. Obtain AdawareSE and Spybot Search & Destroy,
update both, then boot into Safe Mode and use them. Let them get rid of
everything they find. Use only one at a time. After all that, use that above
CD utility again.
If you're the real curious sort of fellow and you want to trace down the
cause before clearing infection, then obtain these following monitoring
utilities and learn how to set their filters so their real-time logs are not
excessively large and confusing. You must install and use them from an
account having full administrative priviliges. They don't do anything except
create usage logs of the registry and of files, they are safe in of
themselves.
