CF Failure

I had a weird problem yesterday and I was wondering if any of you have seen
this. Technician powered off my embedded system which is not running ewf
right now. Today he tried to turn it on and nothing. So I drove out there
and he system was hanging on the hard drive detect (No Hard drives
available). I checked it out and the CF, could not even be seen by Windows
or Fdisk. It basically was totally dead.

Pretty new CF, just a week old. It was a cheapy though, Lexar 128 meg 40x
from Walmart.

Anyone experience any thing like this or any ideas what may have caused it
(besides a faulty cf).

I can't speak of any card but when I was using Lexar CF cards I was able to damage a couple of them so that I wasn't able to
reformat them afterwards at all. Basically the cards became unusable for me.
Although it is not exactly your problem, the point is that it is possible to damage cards on XPe so that you can't use them at all.
Especially the cheap ones.

Btw, as you probably already know, an image without EWF on CF may not be a good use.
Also, UPS would be a good idea.
 
Yes, EWF will eventually be on this image, but during testing I don't have
it turned on at the moment. On my Dev Machine, I've been using a 384 meg
for almost a year copying files daily and doing FBA and everything else on
it. It's been rock solid.

I'll end up having to do partitions on the cf because I have to save a small
amount of configuration data to the CF. So I need to start reading up on
EWF Again.

As far as the UPS, well, we are battery powered, but my new terminal boards
will have a soft shutdown on it, so when the user turns off the power, XPe
shutsdown normally then opens the power relay turning off the system.
