Is there a way to center a heading over two columns. Right now, the
best I can do is (1) enter the first half of the column header in the
left column (2). right-adjust it (3). enter the second half of the
column header in the right column (4). left-adjust it.

Looks kludgy. There must be a better way.

TIA

Pete,

Simply select the two cells, goto menu Format>Cells, select the Alignment
tab, and check the Merge Cells box

Hilight both cells and right click them, chose format cells, ailignment
tab, then in the horizontal box click "center across selection"

Enter your text in A1. Select A1 and B1 then
Format>Cells>Alignment>Horizontal>Center across Selection.

Try not to use "merged" cells. They will cause no end of problems later with
copy/pasting, sorting and others.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Boy, it's easy now !!!!

BTW, are you suggesting that we should NOT use the Merge and Center
icon located on the toolbar? Is it somehow different behavior than
Format | Cells | Center Across Selection?

Pete,

The choice is yours, as you say they are slightly different in their
behaviour.

Centring across the selection seems to be just in the way it is shown, the
other cells are still available to enter data in.and see that data. With
merge, the cells are effectively coerced, so you can only enter data in one.
If you merge two completed cells, the second's data will be lost.

As I say, it's whatever suits.

May I just add to this? I now never merge cells - I always "centre across
selection". My experience (together with many others, from what you read in
these newsgroups) is that merging has many undesirable side effects. But, in
the end, the choice is yours.
