I've come across a spreadsheet before where the top row
is 'fixed in position'... ie: when you scroll down, only
the lower rows move up and down, whereas the top row
(containing the date) stays in the same place so that it
can always be read. How do you do this?

1. Drag down the split handle top of right scroll bar.
2. menu Window/Freeze Panes.
see also window/Split option

It's called Freeze Panes, and you find it on the Window menu.
You select the first cell from the top left that you want to allow to scroll
and then do
Window > Freeze Panes.
So, if you select cell A2, just the top row is frozen.
If you select cell A3, the top two rows are frozen.
If you select cell B2, the top row and the left column are frozen.
And so on.

Use window and then either freeze panes or split

If you highlight the row below heading whole screen will scroll below headings if you highlight say cel B2 the column a will stay fixed and row 1 when you scroll around in right hand pane
