Cell total plus and minus amounts

Is there a formula that you can total all of the + or - in one cell? For
example if the cell shows =+5-3-8+9 what is the formula that would add the +
totals and would equal 14?
 
There isn't a formula to do that (to the best of my knowledge)... If those
individual values were in seperate cells then it would be relatively straight
forward with a simple sumif, but in the current form you are up the creek...
