Mike

I have a .xls regular spreadsheet with part numbers that
begin with "0" like "0785547". I need the spreadsheet to
be in Text (tab-delimited) format.

1. In the .xls file the column of part numbers IS
formatted as text.
2. Save As: I select Text (Tab-delimited). Confirm that
yes, that's what I want, and that yes, I know only the
current sheet will be saved...
3. When I open the .txt file, all the zeros at the
beginning of the part numbers are gone. If I highlight the
cell and go to Format>Cells, "General" is selected. If I
pick "Text," it's still left at "785547". I NEED the part
numbers to stay the same (starting with a zero).

What can I do? Please help.

Thank you in advance,
MikeT

I presume you mean that the zeros are disappearing when
you open the text file in Excel?

When you open a file with a .txt extension in Excel, the
Import Text Wizard should be displayed.

Step 1 of 3 - Select Delimited, Click Next
Step 2 of 3 - Select Tab, Click Next
Step 3 of 3 - Change the Column Data Format to Text. It
is set to General as a default, click Finish

The zeros should still be there.

Hi
you have to put the format to the cells before you,
put the data in it.
try this, select a column format->cells:Text
then put yoyur data in this column.
then made save like, etc.
It should work
