Hi can anyone tell me how to insert text as a
background/watermark on a few specific cells and not the
entire spreadsheet. Basically i will have my spreadsheet
with all the usual figures and wording, but what i need to
do is for each company and there stock levels if the
leverls are too low i need to put 'Priority 1,2 or 3' over
those cells but still be able to view the sheet as normal,
i know its possible in excel as i've done it before but
cant remember how. please desperate thanks.

Hi Cal.........

You can overlay a TEXT box with a transparent background over the cells at
issue, but this makes the text hard to read, one on top of the
other.........if you don't use a transparent background, the text below is
covered up.........why not just use Conditional Formatting to change the
cell background color or Border Color or Font color to raise your
"alarms"?.......then you would not have to do each by hand.

Hi thanks if it was that easy i would but it has to be
done that way and for the life of me i cant remember how
to do it, i have tried it the way you suggested and many
others.thanks

Hi Cal..........

I assume then you've probably tried "WordArt" also, ......so maybe try
setting up your "Priority One" message in a spare cell(s) somewhere off
screen, then doing Ctrl-Shift-Edit > Copy Picture.........and then pasteing
it over your cells...........and/or just saving your message as a .jpg file
and then inserting it into your sheet.......and you can then turn the
background transparent if you wish..........

Hi thanks fo rhte reply again I have tried it hte way you
suggested, but I have now been told that the information
in the spreadhseet will change daily therefore they need
to be able to change the 'Priority' easily which will mean
embedding the background somehow or a watermark which i
dont think can be done in excel.thanks

Hi Cal.........

You still might check into Conditional formatting...........it will change
the color of the background, border, or font depending on the value in the
cell..........it won't say "Priority", but it will light the cell up RED or
otherwise bring the readers attention to it........

Hi Cal,

It is possible, but it's a little wild...

You will need to set up a cell that contains a formula to get the "Priority"
text that you want to display as a background to another cell.

Then, create a text box over the cell that you want to apply the background
to, (hold Alt to get the box to snap to the edges of cells). With the text
box still selected, type a reference (to the cell containing the text you
want displayed) into the formula bar. Now you can change the properties of
the text box to fade it like a watermark. Unfortunately, it is now OVER the
text in the cell that you want it displayed. You could remove the fill from
the text box, but that would still show the text itself over the cell.
So...
You do the same with the cell concerned to turn it into a linked text box,
which you can then place above the first one.

It's a bit on the mad side, and not exactly user friendly, but it works...
